Web site statistics - using them to improve your web site WEB SITE STATISTICS - USING THEM TO IMPROVE YOUR WEB SITE
Web site statistics are much more than simply a list of "hits". You can use your web site statistics to continually improve your web site listing on the search engines, and to help your customers easily find your site.

All of our web sites packages include 24/7 access to an online web site visitor statistics area which provides you with a wide range of information about your web site visitors. For example, you can use the statistics to find out the following information:

Number of visitors
Most popular pages
Time spent on your web site
Country of origin
Where the person was prior to visiting your site
Keywords and phrases used to find your site

Of all of the features in the statistics area (only a small sample are listed above), perhaps the most useful are the last two mentioned, often called your "Referrers". The beauty of the referrers section is that it allows you to see which page someone was on, immediately prior to visiting your site. For example, you may have a link to your web site on another web site. Checking the referrers section in your web site statistics allows you to see how many people have come to your web site, by clicking on that link.

Over time you will start to see which links are providing you with the most traffic and you may decide, as a result of that information, to increase your advertising in those areas.

Similarly, if your site is listed on the search engines, you will be able to see which search engines are providing you with the most number of visitors and you may decide to change your marketing strategy based on that information.

Another very useful feature in the referrers section is the ability to see which words or phrases are being typed into the search engines, in order to find your web site.

For example, if you run an accommodation business, you may find that American visitors are typing in the word "Motel" or "Lodge" when looking for accommodation - are these words that you perhaps don't have on your site? If you started to notice these words in the referrers section, then you could start to incorporate them into your web site text, so as to catch more people.

A good example in relation to this is the fact that most people spell the word accommodation incorrectly, such as acommodation or accomodation - are these mis-spellings included on your web site?

Your web site statistics are a very useful tool so be sure to regularly check them and change your web site accordingly.
